Brith Sholom Beth Israel (BSBI) and the Christian-Jewish Council of Greater Charleston announces a fascinating program. The program is called “Restoring A Rescued Torah from the Holocaust.” The program tells the story of how a group of Monks managed to rescue a Torah scroll from a magnificent synagogue, just moments before it was destroyed during the Holocaust in World War II.
After decades of laying dormant in the cellar of a monastery, The Torah was identified as damaged, but salvageable by a special team from a non-profit organization called “Save the Torah Foundation,” based in Bethesda, Maryland. The Vengrov Torah (named after the town of its origin in Poland) desperately needs much overdue restoration, as there are many letters and words that are cracked, broken or missing altogether, rendering the Torah unfit for use. Brith Sholom Beth Israel Congregation (BSBI) in Charleston is sponsoring the restoration with the goal of eventually bringing and utilizing the restored Torah to their synagogue here in Charleston to be read from on a weekly basis.
A Torah can only be repaired by a trained rabbi or scribe. We are pleased to welcome Rabbi Menachem Youlus from the Save The Torah Foundation to this program. He will discuss his organization, how the Torah was found, and describe how the Torah is being restored. Attendees will also have an opportunity to make a donation to the cause, for a once in a lifetime opportunity to actually fill in missing letters together with Rabbi Youlus.
This event celebrates the partnerships between multiple religions in rescuing and restoring this ancient relic.
The Save the Torah Foundation has rescued 1,100 Torahs to date. Rabbi Youlus will bring the Vengov Torah with him to Charleston.
