The Shavuot Retreat last week was, by all accounts a tremendous success. We heard, and continue to hear, extremely positive feedback from our out of town guests who were delighted with their Charleston yom tov. And, our locals enjoyed themselves thoroughly and were enveloped by the yom tov.

With 50 out of town guests and broad participation by our Congregation, we served 5 major meals in two days, plus Kiddushes and Viennese tables. On Wednesday, we had more than 120 individuals for lunch and served more than 450 meals over the course of yom tov. The over night learning program was inspiring. All of us were charmed and enlightened by lectures by two fabulous community leaders, Robert Rosen and Marty Perlmutter. We also ran two round table discussions and sponsored two walking tours of Charleston.

A major project like this could not have occurred without an extraordinary amount of work and commitment by a great number of people who selflessly worked to make yom tov the outstanding event it was.

We would like to recognize the core event & programing team for their efforts:
Joyce Haber
Monty Schwartz
Johanna Feldman
Ellen Allen
Andy Allen
Susan Kaufman
Eric Schaffer
Joellen Kirshtein
The shul looked beautiful due to the decorating talents of:
Sara Beth Rosen
Barbara Schwartz
Carolyn Berlin
Karen Ortner
The overnight learning was blessed with lectures by:
David Kirshtein
Michael Friedman
Steven Mermelstein

Our round table participants, Joe Chase, Betty Lancer, Henry Berlin, Shirley Prystowsky, Stuart Kaufman, Susan Kaufman, Joyce Haber, Andy Allen and Ellen Allen charmed everyone.

We also must point out the extraordinary committment and dedication, at all sorts of hours by Shannon, James and Jeremiah.

And, lastly, the event would have been impossible without the leadership and inspiration from our Rabbi and Rebbitzin, Moshe & Ariela Davis.

Todah Rabah to one and all!

Three Rabbi Panel
ON UNDERSTANDING THE RABBINATE:
PREPARATION AND DAY-TO-DAY LIFE OF A PULPIT RABBI

Thursday, April 4, 2013 at 7:30pm
Stern Center Ballroom (4th Floor)
Corner of Glebe & George Streets

Now in its seventeenth year, the Three Rabbi Panel is one of the most significant accomplishments of the College of Charleston’s Jewish Studies Program as it demonstrates the open and collaborative nature of Charleston’s Jewish community and clergy.

This semester, our panel will provide an inside look into the training for and reality of their day-to-day responsibilities as leaders of Charleston’s three oldest synagogues.

What are the similarities and differences between Reform, Conservative and Orthodox rabbinic training? What were their expectations upon entering the rabbinate, and how have those expectations been realized within their respective pulpits? How do the responsibilities placed upon our rabbis vary by denomination, and how do these responsibilities define the different denominations?

The three panelists will also share the professional challenges and joys that they experience on a daily basis.
